Air Pressure Maintenance

I've spent a considerable amount of time researching Truck type Tires. Yet, I have not been able to discover what percentage of tires actually survive all their trials and reach old age. I do, however, suspect that a significant percentage of tires contract a variety of ills that lead to a premature end.

There are several reasons for the untimely demise of tires. A few of the more commonly known reasons are:

  1. bad valve stem
  2. unbalanced
  3. mis-alignment
  4. excessive speed
  5. excessive scrubbing, slipping and dragging
  6. mismatched
  7. road debris (nails, bolts, glass, sharp rocks, etc.)
  8. curbs and potholes
  9. overloaded
In spite of the above reasons why tires fail prematurely, the biggest culprit in my opinion, would be "heat" due to "underinflation".

One would think that in this modern "Just In Time" world of digital gadgets, that flats and blowouts would be a thing of the past. Unfortunately, inspite of much better tires - over heated tires, flats and blowouts are still of stark reality. The evidence is the dark shadowy nightmares curled-up or stretched-out on our hwys.

There are only a few tried and true ways to reduce the incidence of over-heated tires, which are:

  1. tire checks at all scheduled PM's.
  2. tire checks before leaving
  3. tire checks in-route
  4. tire checks upon arrival
Most companies and entrapenurial O/O's perform inflation status checks during their normal weekly or monthly PM's. However, no matter how the pie is cut, it's the drivers who get the biggest slice of in-route tire checks.

Trouble is - how many large companies, small fleet owners, independent O/O's actually assist drivers by providing a reasonably reliable tool to quickly monitor the tires every few hours and still make schedule? Then the question becomes - how often do drivers actually check tire inflation status? Clearly, the benefits for drivers to have a quick, reliable means of monitoring tire inflation status is simply common sense.

LINKS TO TIRE PAGES

My primary aim is to reduce tire related downtime, drive RoadGators to extinction and help keep our highways as safe as possible. Therefore, this page will contain relavant links to assist drivers, O/O's and large or small companies conveniently find pertinate tire (inflation) information.

The following trucking related links are furnished as a driver information resource. We hope you find the following links helpful.

Mike Lebo's Invention

Looking for partner to market and sell, LOW TIRE PRESSURE WARNING SYSTEMS that I've designed, developed and patented for the big rigs. This system will meet proposed Federal regulations for low tire pressure warning systems on all tandem-wheel vehicles and trailers. There are no wires or troublesome air hoses to connect and maintain. No modifications are needed to the existing wheel. No special tools are needed for installation. The driver will be warned within the cab if a tire has lost air pressure. It works 24 hours a day, every day, for more then 10 years.

For more information about my unique system contact me Mike Lebo

Note: As I (Joseph Cummins) have mentioned near top of this page - the purpose of these links is to help anyone interested in tire inflation. And, because I'm truly interested in highway safety, as well as making OTR life better I have included Mr. Mike Lebo's information. However, I (Joseph Cummins and Accu-Thump Sales) do not endorse nor promote any of the products, with the obvious exception of Accu-Thump listed on this "Air Pressure Maintenance & Tire Links" page.
