Weights of Common Commercial Tire Thumpers Found in Truck Stops:

Wood billy-type club with metal band ...........=.5 pound.........$3-4
Wood billy-type club with metal plug ...........=.8 pound.........$6-7
Fiberglass solid shaft with plastic handle......= 1.6 pounds......$9-12
Metal shaft with plastic grip handle............= 1.25 pounds.....$10-15
Ball-peen hammer................................= 1.3 pounds.....$5-10
Claw hammer.....................................= 1.6 pounds......$8-20

None of the above have sufficient/proper weight leveraged striking ends, and because of their design they cannot always hit the tread with SAME amount of thumping area.

There are numerous other non-commercial thumpers (pipe, re-bar, ball-bats, fish thumpers, tire irons, etc.). None of these are reliable methods of thumping tires. And, this includes the much heavier hand held 2-3 pound sledge hammer or the very large ball-pin hammers ($20-30). Ball-peen hammers do not have the correct weight ratio at the striking end. The wood handle distorts and dampens the feel/sound. And, this type of hammer has to be held in a certain manner in order to even hit the tire properly. Furthermore, these types of handles have to be gripped tightly to avoid being flung from the hand, thus the complete loss of flexibility.
